Abstract
Slope stability is a critical aspect of road embankment planning and construction, as slope failure can cause structural damage and compromise road user safety. The BIL–Mandalika Bypass road embankment at station (STA) 10+400 is susceptible to reduced stability due to the combined effects of embankment weight, traffic loads, and seismic loads. Installing geotextiles as reinforcement is one method to enhance slope stability. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how varying geotextile installation spacing affects the stability of the BIL–Mandalika Bypass embankment (STA 10+400), specifically evaluating the Factor of Safety and Total Displacement. To achieve the research objectives, a numerical analysis was conducted using the Finite Element Method via PLAXIS 2D software. The data utilized—including slope geometry and soil parameters—were obtained from P2JN West Nusa Tenggara Province. UW-250 geotextiles were used for reinforcement, with installation spacings varied at 0.5 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m, and 2.0 m. Analyses were performed under three loading conditions: the embankment-only condition, a condition with a traffic load of 15 kN/m², and a seismic loading condition using a horizontal seismic coefficient (kh) of 0.22305—derived from the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) for the Lombok region based on the Indonesian Design Response Spectrum. The parameters evaluated were the Factor of Safety and Total Displacement. The results indicate that varying geotextile installation spacing significantly influences the improvement of embankment slope stability. Compared to the condition without geotextiles, the 0.5 m spacing variation yielded the greatest increase in the Factor of Safety: 19.85% for the embankment-only condition, 22.01% for the traffic load condition, and 14.99% for the seismic load condition. Meanwhile, spacing variations of 1.0 m, 1.5 m, and 2.0 m resulted in a smaller increase in the Factor of Safety. These results indicate that the closer the spacing of the geotextile installation, the greater the improvement in slope stability. The 0.5 m spacing variation yielded Factor of Safety values of 1.479, 1.430, and 1.304, and Total Displacement values of 0.2653 m, 0.2759 m, and 0.2869 m across the respective loading conditions. Thus, the 0.5 m geotextile spacing variation represents the most effective configuration for enhancing the stability of the embankment slope at STA 10+400 of the BIL–Mandalika Bypass Road.
