Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the use of the Duolingo application significantly enhances students' vocabulary achievement at SMP Muhammadiyah Narmada in the 2025/2026 academic year. Although several previous studies have reported the effectiveness of Duolingo in improving vocabulary, most were conducted in public schools with unrestricted access to digital devices, leaving a gap regarding its implementation in Islamic boarding school settings where electronic device use is institutionally restricted. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental method, specifically a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 20 eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Narmada, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a vocabulary test administered as a pre-test and a post-test, with Duolingo-based treatment given between the two tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a normality test (Shapiro–Wilk), and a paired sample t-test with the help of SPSS. The results showed that the students' mean score increased from 50.75 in the pre-test to 77.25 in the post-test, an average improvement of 26.50 points. Both pre-test and post-test data were normally distributed (Sig. > 0.05), and the paired sample t-test produced a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted, indicating a statistically significant difference between students' vocabulary achievement before and after using Duolingo. It can be concluded that the Duolingo application is effective in enhancing junior high school students' vocabulary achievement, even in a setting with restricted technology access
