Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in enhancing students' mastery of English vocabulary through a pre-experimental design employing a one-group pretest–posttest model. The participants consisted of 22 students who engaged in a two-week vocabulary learning program using Duolingo as a supplementary learning tool. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results of the One-Sample Kolmogorov–Smirnov Test indicated that the data were not perfectly normally distributed (p = 0.031 < 0.05); however, the deviation from normality was minor and acceptable for parametric testing. The paired sample t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t = -6.858, p = 0.000 < 0.05), confirming that the observed improvement was not due to chance. The mean score increased from 63.42 in the pre-test to 85.08 in the post-test, demonstrating a substantial improvement of 21.66 points. These findings provide empirical evidence that Duolingo effectively enhances students' English vocabulary mastery through its gamified design, adaptive exercises, and immediate feedback features. Therefore, it can be concluded that Duolingo serves as an effective digital learning platform that promotes learner engagement, motivation, and autonomy in the acquisition of vocabulary.
