Abstract

Inorganic clay with high plasticity ("fat clay") is a soil type characterized by high plasticity and susceptibility to volume changes resulting from fluctuations in moisture content. Such conditions necessitate soil improvement through stabilization methods. This study aims to determine the characteristics of the clay prior to stabilization, analyze the effects of adding rice husk ash and lime on the soil's load-bearing capacity, and identify the mixture variation that yields the best results. The soil samples used in this study were obtained from Barelantan Hamlet, Gapura Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency. The stabilization materials consisted of 20% lime combined with varying amounts of rice husk ash—specifically 10%, 20%, and 30% of the soil's dry weight. Physical property tests included moisture content (SNI 1965:2019), unit weight (SNI 03-3637:1994), specific gravity (SNI 1964:2008), sieve and hydrometer analysis (SNI 3423:2008), and Atterberg limits (SNI 1967:2008). Mechanical property tests comprised compaction testing (Standard Proctor) and the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test (SNI 1744:2012). All testing was conducted at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram. Based on the physical property test results, the native soil exhibited a moisture content of 25.50%, specific gravity of 2.51, liquid limit (LL) of 76.48%, plastic limit (PL) of 29.21%, and plasticity index (PI) of 47.27%. According to the USCS classification system, the soil falls into the CH group (Clay with High Plasticity), while under the AASHTO system, it is classified as group A-7-6 (clay with high plasticity). The addition of 20% lime and rice husk ash reduced the plasticity index to 17.24% for the 10% RHA mixture, 13.70% for the 20% RHA mixture, and 8.97% for the 30% RHA mixture. Compaction test results showed that the optimum moisture content (OMC) decreased from 29.32% to 24.49%, while the maximum dry density (MDD) increased from 1.19 g/cm³ to 1.289 g/cm³. Soaked CBR testing of the original soil yielded a swelling value of 6.11%, while unsoaked CBR testing showed the original soil's CBR value was 3.80%; this increased to 12.76% with the 20% lime and 10% RHA mixture, reached a peak of 14.45% with the 20% lime and 20% RHA mixture, and decreased to 11.88% with the 20% lime and 30% RHA mixture. These test results indicate that the mixture of 20% lime and 20% rice husk ash yielded the highest CBR value. These findings demonstrate that lime and rice husk ash can enhance the bearing capacity of clay soil.
