Abstract

Indonesia possesses the world's largest nickel reserves, with North Maluku standing out as a prospective region due to the presence of ultramafic rocks—the parent material for nickel laterite deposits. This study aims to determine the Rate of Penetration (ROP) during drilling operations, geochemical characteristics, and the distribution of nickel laterite mineralization in the Moronopo area, East Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. A quantitative approach with a correlational-explanatory design was employed, utilizing secondary exploration data from PT Bahana Selaras Alam covering three boreholes (YD0132T, YD0134T, and YD0137T); the data underwent cleaning, lithological zone coding, and interval compositing. The results indicate that ROP values ​​vary according to the penetrated lithology; the highest rates occur in the limonite-saprolite zone, while rates tend to decrease in the saprolite-bedrock zone due to increased resistance against the drill bit. Average geochemical concentrations were recorded as follows: Ni 1.45%, Fe 21.8%, Co 0.01–0.21%, MgO 13.17%, and SiO2 38.47%. The limonite zone is characterized by high Fe content but low SiO2 and MgO levels; the saprolite zone exhibits higher Ni, SiO2, and MgO concentrations due to residual silicate minerals; and the bedrock zone shows low Fe with relatively high SiO2 and MgO levels resulting from minimal weathering. The highest Ni concentrations were found in the saprolite zone, confirming the vertical zonation pattern typical of nickel laterite profiles, which is closely linked to the drilling mechanism's response.
