Abstract
This research aims to explore university students’ perceptions and experiences of using Ginger Software in enhancing English writing skills. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design, supported by questionnaire and semi-structured interview data. The participants were undergraduate students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram who had experience using Ginger Software in their writing activities. The questionnaire data were analyzed descriptively to identify general patterns of students’ perceptions, while the interview data were analyzed thematically to obtain deeper insights into students’ experiences, benefits, and challenges in using the software. The findings revealed that students generally perceived Ginger Software as a useful and practical tool for supporting English writing. The software helped students identify grammatical errors, correct spelling mistakes, improve sentence structure, increase writing accuracy, and choose more appropriate vocabulary. Ginger Software was also perceived as easy to use because it provided immediate correction suggestions and supported students during the revision process. In addition, the software contributed positively to students’ motivation, confidence, learner autonomy, and engagement by allowing them to revise their writing independently before receiving feedback from lecturers or peers. However, the findings also showed several limitations. Some students reported that the feedback was not always contextually accurate, particularly in academic writing or complex sentences. The software also focused more on surface-level language issues than on content development, organization, and argumentation. Therefore, Ginger Software should be used as a supplementary writing support tool rather than a complete replacement for lecturer feedback or students’ own understanding of English writing
