Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sarcasm and satire found in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The researchers focused on analyzing the types of sarcasm and satire used in the movie and to find out which one is dominantly used between sarcasm and satire in the movie. Deadpool & Wolverine movie itself was written by Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy. The story of this movie is said to be full of humor, sarcasm, and satire in it, which can make the audience interested in watching it. In sarcasm, the researcher used Elizabeth Camp's theory; according to her, there are four types of sarcasm. On the other hand, for satire, the researcher used Abrams' and Harphams' theory; according to them, there are three types of satire. The researcher used Elizabeth Camp's theory also Abrams' and Harpham's theory because their theory is suitable for the research. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the 31 utterances of several characters in this movie. The results reveal that all types of satire (Juvenalian, Horation, and Manippean) were uttered. On the other hand, the researcher also found three types of sarcasm (Propositional, Lexical, and Illocutionary), while like' prefixed sarcasm was not found in this movie. The total data is 31, which consists of 18 sarcastic utterances and 13 satire utterances. Sarcasm is dominantly used in this movie. Overall, these findings illustrated how Deadpool & Wolverine utilized humor, sarcasm, and satire to strengthen its main characters and critique various aspects of life and the fictional world they live in. While sarcasm dominated, the use of satire in a lighter form also showed how the film successfully combined various elements of humor to create an entertaining and thought-raising viewing experience.
